Saturday 8th of June
Story of Tango
Inspired by 'The Man on the Pink Corner'

Literary event
(followed by a tango class & milonga)

This is multi-media event  (dramatization, dance and musings) is inspired by "El Hombre de la Esquina Rosada", "The  Man on the Pink Corner", one of the most famous short stories by the great Argentinian writer, Jorge Luis Borges.
The story is set in the early days of tango, before it crossed the Atlantic to  become sophisticated in the salons of Paris, later to return to Argentina, now  elegant and acceptable in respectable places…  Borges' story shows us a mythic tango before gentrification, the tango of the compadrito - the thugs  and low-lifes who frequented the milongas. The story begins with a dance, ends with a knife fight and is imbued  with the spirit of the arrabal.
To the accompaniment of classics from the Golden Age of tango music, an actor will improvise a narrative, with the high points dramatized by renowned Tango performers Simona Zaino and Hernán Catvin. Tango student and  writer Liz McSkeane will introduce the event with some  reflections on the origins and social context of the  evolution of this magical dance.
